At the World Environmental Leadership Conference presented by Newsweek, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made an address and delivered very strong words to U.S. automakers. The Governor wanted the car manufacturers to make changes to reduce harmful greenhouse gases in the exhaust gases emitted from vehicle models. He also commented on the plate in Detroit, who criticized the awarding of standards for vehicle exhaust emissions in California, for car manufacturers, especially Michigan-based automakers are unwilling to respond. Here is a portion of his speech, Schwarzenegger. ”I say a little surprised to be here, and the reason is that three and a half years ago when I ran for governor I was then about environmental protesters with signs. Thanks again for the Assembly Woman Pavley. (Applause) Now I know that this is an environmental conference, but I want to start talking first about bodybuilding. And the reason is because bodybuilding is another my passion, as you may know, and has similarities there. Bodybuilding used to have a very sketchy picture. In fact, so much so that some people who have worked seriously and pumped weights did not admit to bodybuilding. Actually the old days, is a very famous Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, and the list for a long time, it worked with weights, but never admit it publicly that they want to connect to the gymnasiums that looked like dungeons and that had fanatics and it had weird people training there. Today you can go anywhere in the world and find a bodybuilding gymnasium or a place where you can do weight resistance training, and you can go to any gym and you’ll find ordinary people talking about the ABS, in response, deltoides, their body fat, and all these things. So this is how it will change. Became mainstream, became sexy, attractive. And that is exactly what will happen with the environmental movement. Like bodybuilders were environmentalists as a bit weird and fanatics also. You know, the kind of serious tree Huggers. Environmentalists were no fun, it was the anti-prohibitionists at a fraternity party. (Applause) Thus, any other day showed me a cartoon that was a car dealer showroom talking to this couple. And dealers said car and said: “This car runs on a standard gasoline engine, and then when you feel a bit guilty, feel guilty when they switch to battery power.” Now this is fun, is a caricature. But let me tell you one thing, there is much truth in it. For too long the environmental movement was driven by guilt. But I think it is switching from the power of guilt to being powered by something very positive, much more dynamic, much more likely to cause significant changes. But there are two things that stand, that we have received the most attention. 1. Each year we add more and more partners to join our team. We are increasing the momentum for change. Now there’s a billboard in Michigan that accuses me of the cost of the car industry 85 billion dollars. They say that new carbon fuel standards will cost us 85 billion dollars. Billboard says “Arnold to Michigan-drop dead.” The fact is, what I’m saying is, Arnold to Michigan-get off your butt. Get off your butt and join us. (Applause) In fact, California may be doing more to save U.S. automakers than anyone else, because what we are doing is pushing to make changes, make changes so that they can sell their cars in California. And we all know, let’s be honest, if not changed, someone will. The Japanese are Chinese, South Koreans will come, would the Germans, all will. So what I want to do is, I would like to prevent this. I want to sell their cars in California. I believe strongly in American technology, and I think ultimately the technology will ultimately save Detroit.
